Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Console Thread: Spawn on me

Electronic Arts presents a DICE production

BATTLEFIELD: BAD COMPANY 2

Another goddamn online first person shooter available from Amazon.com with a SOME RANDOM rear end DEAL TO MAKE YOU BUY THE GAME

This is not the PC thread, I swear if any of you fuckers talk about DIRECT X in here; this isn't the thread for that, go here instead

What is BAD COMPANY?

Bad Company refers to one of two things. A DICE produced spin-off, BAD COMPANY was developed as the console standard cousin of its well-established Battlefield franchise; the goal was creating a game that was more streamlined, featured players in smaller squads with a more direct game objective (Rush Mode, with the classic "Conquest" being added in much later) and had less "bullshit" than the its PC brethren. It mostly worked, even though "bullshit" is a staple of the BF franchise.

Within the game mythos, BAD COMPANY refers to the titular group who starred in the first game. They made a mostly mediocre single player campaign a bit more tolerable by having some pretty fun banter (think tongue in cheek action flick) and some fairly "META" commercials ripping on other staples of the FPS and action genre (and also the TACTICAL ESPIONAGE ACTION sub-genre).

Streamlined? CONSOLE-IZED? DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT I AM A GOON, GOOD SIR!

The only things really stripped out of this game (from BF2, mind you, the PC BFBC2 seems mostly identical, but I'll cover this later) are large player counts and large squads. If you want something that's going to be more "PC-ey" or "simulation-ey" I have no idea why you'd be playing a Battlefield game in the first place, let alone one for a console.

Single player ACTION TIME GO

There really isn't any info about the single player aside from the basic premise that you're in a squad (BAD COMPANY, same dudes from BFBC1) that may or may not go rogue (this being the entire theme of the first game, so I will assume) and trying to find some fictional, mystery weapon. The single player in BFBC1 was mostly forgettable save for a few moments involving banter between the squad members. I know nothing about returning voice actors, etc, but it's safe to assume that EA threw a bunch of money at them so it will likely be the same guys.

From a more personal standpoint, the trailers released thus far make the game look a tad more serious than the original. I can only assume this is because DICE has gone on some bullshit holy quest to compare BFBC2 to the Modern Warfare franchise. I think it's stupid to compare the two, but I'm not in marketing so I officially know poo poo.

Multiplayer, or as it is known colloquially "THE ENTIRE GAME"

BFBC enjoyed a good 6 hour lifespan as a single player game, and then went on to live a comfortable 8-10 months on these forums alone, and is probably still played by kids who like matte gray cases to this day. My stupid rear end "lumberjack" joke I had in the thread title was obsolete before I hit "submit new thread" so you can imagine how great it was to see it there nearly a year later. BFBC2 is more of the same, but with some significant upgrades.

The classes have been condensed and are now Assault, Recon, Engineer and Support. Squad roles are condensed as well, with Assault now carrying the ammo pack, and engineer being not only the RPG guy, but the guy with the drill as well. Support now only gets a med-pack, which only heals while it is on the ground (no following people with a med-pack out and basically allowing them to live forever as in the first game). Recon gets recon balls, which are loving amazing but nobody uses, and the indirect fire weapons (mortar, laser guided missile).

First of all there are more weapons and weapon customization this time through. 60 some odd infantry weapons, at least 80% of which feature the ability to add one of two optics (4x and red dot) means you're going to have a lot to play with. Beyond that, the firearms mechanics in BFBC1 were incredibly loose, so most weapons had massive magazines (50 or so for a basic assault rifle), and this seems to have been revised due to the much improved firearms model of the second game (most weapons killing in 4-5 hits, location not withstanding). Burst weapons actually fire in burst mode now. BFBC1 had several guns that fired in select fire mode constantly, but in reality (or in the weapon description) were meant to fire in 2 or 3 round burst. It's a nice change of pace from the 50 round M16 of the first game.

Guns do damage, and without going into numbers it's easier to just say they fuckin' hurt and if you're getting hit by them you should probably do something to stop that. I'll talk more about marksmanship a little later, as it appears some players are having issues with it.

Beyond the weapon customization the game features a fairly robust "Specialization" system that allows you, the player, to upgrade various facets of your character. These include weapon accuracy, vehicle armor/weapons, health/ammo regeneration rate and range of your med-packs/ammo, and a whole hell of a lot more. This gives you plenty of room to specialize your character and actually be different from the guy next to you, which is something horribly lacking in a lot of larger team based FPS nowadays.

Finally, the much touted destruction system has been updated to be completely loving ridiculous. BFBC1 let you blow out walls, and take down a couple buildings. BFBC2 lets you make craters and literally create a trail of scorched earth in your team's wake. Destruction 2.0 lets you take down entire buildings, with people in them, and can completely change the tactics used from one point on the field to the next.

As an aside the acoustics engine is the same as it was in the first game, which is to say "Corey Haim AND Corey Feldman."

All this sounds like a shitload to just boot up into, I thought you said it was STREAMLINED?

Well you don't start with a whole lot unlocked. Like every BF game before it, the game features a rather expansive POINTS system that lets you rank up and unlock poo poo as you go. It's pretty neat, and it keeps you from ever being overwhelmed by the huge amount of poo poo you get to customize your character.

Much like another FPS in "not quite this genre but similar enough that we can make an ad campaign out of comparing ourselves to it" you gain experience points for doing various things. You can kill man, heal man, repair man, drop building on man, shoot man with gun A LOT and gain proficiency stars on your weapon, and probably a bunch of other poo poo that nobody has found in the demo which caps you at level 3.

Along with the EXP, since this is an EA game, you get a really nice stat tracking utility that lets you know how many times you've accidentally shock paddled a bad guy while trying to revive a team mate. As you play it tracks all your kills/time crouching/ethnic slurs and lets you view them at a later time and really take in what it's like to fire a pistol 812 times and only get 19 kills with it (true story). There are medals/ribbons for bonus exp, and crazy rear end squad rewards for doing poo poo, both effective and otherwise.

So those of you who like POINTS you shan't be disappointed.

So that's a bunch of cool poo poo, but now that I'm suited up and have totally hot specializations and optics and a coax machine gun for my tank that I apparently carry strapped to my back what can I actually go do?

Glad you asked! The primary mode in this game is called Rush and if you played BFBC1 then you know that it's just Gold Rush but there is no gold this time, only Zuul. An attacking team goes into an enemy base and overpowers the defenders enough to set a charge on one of two crates (MCON) and blow it the gently caress up. You don't really need to set a charge though, you can also just put 12 C4, some C4 with AP mines ("setting the table"), shoot it with tank shells, or even just bring the whole goddamn building down on top of it, guaranteeing a shitload of teamkills and enemy kills alike (also a badass sound effect of a building sounding very uncomfortable after eating at a nice local restaurant that's been dodging health codes by seducing the inspector, dead serious, if it's run out of someone's house, even if you have coupons think very hard about whether it's worth it or not).

The attackers need to blow up both crates several times, each time getting closer and closer to the final checkpoint, and when those go down, it's game over.

Since some people were unhappy with the scale of a 32 person match and felt useless with even that few folks on the field, DICE has taken it upon themselves to open up a more personal "SQUAD RUSH" mode where individual squads face off against each other both in death match and objective based play. There's been some trailers, but no actual public playtest, so I can't really comment aside from being hella excited that scrubs in this game finally have a "1V1 ME NOOB" option for XBL and PSN hate messages. They were really limited before, and I kind of felt bad for them.

The other game mode is Conquest, which is Battlefield (take points to cause ticket draw to win).

So there's only a couple game modes? Won't that get old?

BF is a social game. Look at the threads from previous installments if you need proof of that. Every game has cool moments, cool achievements (the intangible ones) and just a lot of room for a variety of play-styles. Beyond that, DICE has actually supported their previous games with a plethora of maps and updates; some necessary, some completely worthless. There's no doubt in my mind that DICE will continue to support this game well beyond its initial release.

I'm sold, anything else I should know?

FREQUENTLY AXED QUESTIONS

How many maps ship with the game?

Looking like 8, you can check them out at http://ultimateprestige.com/ if you are so inclined. I'm not sure if the smaller scale mode will use new maps or will simply partition chunks out of the existing ones.

Limited Edition Promotion

When the game comes out it's going to feature a "Limited Edition" version that basically consists of the first run of the game. This version includes 6 unlocks that you can get through regular progression. They are as follows:

Improved Vehicle Armor
Vehicle Alternate Fire
Tracer Dart Pistol
M1A1 SMG
1911A1
Vehicle Motion Sensor

They are P-SWEET, but again you can get them just by playing the loving game, so whatever you want to do.

Gamestop Pre-order

You get access to Squad rush 30 days early. This is a terrible idea and a constant reminder of who EA were not two years ago. Don't talk about Gamestop or their policies in here.

Also the AKS74U which is available through regular progression.

Playstation 3 vs. XBOX 360

Literally one half of a frame per second.

Of course you also have to choose between Live or PSN, which I won't even loving get into because frankly this isn't a Youtube comments section. Pick the one you like.

Downloadable Content

Huge misinformation before the Day 1 maps were announced as well as a vague twitter post got everyone thinking the initial DLC would contain Stroke at Kirkland, but we were wrong and instead were given the only night map in the BFBC franchise and another map that looks like something from Armored Fury. Both look good, but I have no idea how a night map is going to handle in a game without optics.

As far as I can tell, this map is part of the "don't buy used games" poo poo that EA is trying to peddle to keep used games sales down. Would be a great idea, but then turning around and giving Gamestop an exclusive game mode for 30 days is completely loving retarded and counterproductive. Whatever, read about it here.

Onslaught Mode
Since everyone is jumping on the horde bandwagon it's only fitting BFBC2 does so as well. The mode is a little light, but still fun for the price.

Bizarre EA promotions

Have mostly passed, there was one to design an achievement, which became "Get a headshot with the Drill" which I guess is neat but protip:  the hit area on the drill is the size of a loving door  shoot the cyber demon, etc.

As well there is http://ultimateprestige.com/ where you enter your gamertag or EA account into and can look at stats for most of the weapons, gadgets and vehicles. It's yet another low blow at a similar game that apparently underwent literally zero testing so is now being "kicked while it is down" in a fairly unprofessional manner. It's a neat site regardless, and contains assets from within the game, so it was probably a bitch to make. Lack of specializations is a bummer though.

Finally you can get the M1 Garand by signing up for Veteran status. Depending how pissed folks get I can post a guide for linking your GT/PSN to your EA account, but it's pretty self-explanatory. The M1 Garand is the only gun you get for doing this, it is unclear whether having BF1943 on your hard drive does this as well, or is a requirement for this promotion.

Oh and the "send your wife away" promo where you win a trip to send your wife away while you play the game. For a company that rips on Activision so much, they should really be careful they don't accidentally BECOME them.

Pretty things

I'll be putting up gameplay vids of goons playing, taped with a late 90's camcorder on a tripod in a co-ed dorm while the camera points towards the bathroom door. I could put some pics up as well, but you'd have no context so there's really no point.

Attacking Video 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmAfmKk_I3M
The first few minutes of this is a fairly standard crate rush strategy. Notice when the squad spawns, and where the C4 is placed. Doing it this way is often much faster than a more "direct" approach. At ~2:00 you can see an attempt at controlling the construction yard, which if achieved makes taking the second crate much easier. Note the ammo boxes and the recon balls, both of which make holding the MG emplacement much easier. At 3:15 is the fairly standard kit swap to revive a fallen medic, this is basic and is a holdover from days long past. At 6:24 you can see the beginnings of an assault on B, with two squad members going in the front door, one throwing a recon ball and staying safe outside. There are several pieces of the environment outside of B that are really difficult to shoot through, and there is a shipping crate that you have to climb the pipe to get onto that is completely obscured from the enemy spawn and really only has one entrance. It's a great place to anchor your spawn if you can get to it. At 6:48 we begin to take B and it's the same strategy as usual, everyone fans out, ammo crate/medic packs/recon balls are dropped. It lists me at this point as an engineer, but I'm actually a Recon with a shotgun (Downy balls, lollin). 8:15 is the ubiquitous "Tube Bug" where you crouch under the tube and it shoots you forward like a drat missile, it's a quick, concealed way to get up to the final point. The squad being split at this point is somewhat unintentional, but you can see that double planting is a valid strategy as it forces the enemy team to disarm two crates, which is fairly difficult. Alpha is disarmed, and we regroup at the now destroyed Bravo. The round is finished without much fanfare here.

Defending Video 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv_r...feature=channel
-Defending Alpha is basically like the reverse of what we just did. There are places on the first point that are fairly hard to defend, specifically the forest area against the mountain near Alpha and the area in front of the battlements at Bravo. Alpha is easy to lose, mainly because it's vulnerable to Destruction 2.0, which can take as few as 4 C4 on that building, nevermind tank rounds or the friendly AT rocket that unsurprisingly has the ability to fire at it. Defending Bravo after that is difficult, but not impossible, there are a few tools you have that can pretty much wreck a well choreographed offense. The MG emplacement on the construction yard has an amazing vantage over not only Bravo, but the hill and the tubes on the left and right. Pubbies love to hang out on the tubes behind the attacker's spawn and snipe, and the heavy MG makes short work of them without actually having to expose yourself, and the same goes for snipers/LMG guys who decide to attack B from the ridge. At 3:29 you can see the inevitable ammo box drop for the squad's Recon (Ryntintin), this is always a good idea as a good Recon will spam recon balls on the area leading up to the crate, or the area where an enemy was last spotted, more or less guaranteeing resupply points pretty constantly. At 4:36 you can see a good example of how you should be firing, take note of it and start firing like that and you'll have more luck.

Defending Video 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO3y...feature=channel
-At this point we're onto the next point, and Ice decides to use the armor to defend Alpha. The placement of the Bradley behind the battlements serves two purposes: it's behind cover and the vehicle radar goes as far as the level boundary so flanking is incredibly difficult. We lose the two crates and there is much DKP loss over the mic, but it doesn't matter because the point of this video was to show you how to defend, which we do quite admirably at the last point. Queue Ice respawning, getting into the Brad and killing a tank (that should have had him dead to rights by all accounts, but pubbies). He sets up on a blind corner leading out of the attacker's spawn, and starts shelling. Ryn and myself know he's hurt, so we go help him out. The enemies start coming in, but they're quickly dispatched, leading to the first case of myopia from the other team. The squad that isn't us gets on Bravo and disarms it, and there are three of my squad on the Bradley, and Hio watching the beach. At this point, I think the fighting gamers call it "Pringles" or something when an enemy is completely locked down. Most of the enemy team spawns engineer making them easy pickings for even a single guy with a larger than 20 round magazine (Hio is a medic at this point). Video continued and round finished in the next segment.

Defending Video 3:IRON CURTAIN DEFENSE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpOf...feature=channel
-Finally the enemy team starts to get wise to the fact that they're being clowned by a single APC, but instead of actually being intelligent they continue to cower. At :20 you can see myself getting capped while attempting to cross the forward killzone. At that point there are no enemies beyond that point on the map. Ryn and myself continue to keep Ice's APC up, with no trouble at all from the UAV which is typically what would be used to kill us. At 2:46 you can see myself getting bored and deciding to speed things up. If you watch my wrench icon on screen at 2:50, you can see me approach the enemy APC, take out my drill and use it to scare the pubbies out of the drivers seat (yes, this is actually why it does damage, I poo poo you not). The drill does a large burst of damage, and most pubbies think that it's either an enemy AT draining the health before it explodes, or that they've taken multiple missile hits. I get in the APC and bring it back to Ice to further fortify the position, and to make sure the enemy doesn't get any armor (which at this point they don't deserve). A couple manage to make it through and set, but our partner squad makes short work of them.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The round becomes more and more lopsided as a result of there now being 8 goons, two full squads, on the defending side. Use private chat to stay linked up and there's really nothing you can't do.

QORE Video[/b]: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpOf...feature=channel
-QORE video for PSN users highlighting construction and features of the game, surprisingly informing and has some screen time with the magnum, which isn't really shown off much.

PRO STRATS

The above videos show off our own strategies for Valdez, the demo map. There are other ways of doing things, but the group we play with comes from a diverse background dating back several Battlefield installments (two of them were even KFS admins at one point!). Below are general pointers for people new to the game or having issues.

Fire in bursts. I cannot stress this enough. The guns have a large cone of fire, and firing more than 2-5 rounds with most guns will have you shooting the wall perpendicular to you. Crouch to keep the cone small, and fire a couple shots, let the reticule shrink for a split second, and fire again. You should be able to kill between 2 and 3 players with an AR/SMG mag, and around 7 or 8 with an LMG. Projectiles in this game are not hit scan, so if your target is moving laterally you are going to need to lead them, which takes practice.

Find a gun you're comfortable with. The weapons all act fairly differently, specifically the muzzle climb. If you find you can score hits competently with a certain gun, use it, don't worry if it's the highest damaging gun or if it's not "PRO."

If all else fails, use a shotgun. I didn't go into it above, but you have the option to switch out the kit specific weapons for "all purpose" guns, which are typically shotguns or in two cases rifles (one semi, one full). The shotguns kill in one hit at close range and excel at defending or assaulting claustrophobic points. The game has an amazing sound engine so people will hear you coming from quite a ways, but if you just pick your fights you can still be plenty effective. Picking a shotgun has the side-effect of replacing the grenade launcher with C4, it is unknown whether this will carry over to retail as it gives you the ability to replenish your own C4 (which isn't really that bad, unless you know CERTAIN THINGS ABOUT THE GAME ENGINE).

Vehicles. Are great. No foolin'. Try out the remote control UAV to get the hang of flying so you don't crash a full transport chopper full of dudes and end up on Conan.

How the hell do I know how much health I have? When you take damage the corners of your screen change color. If it's black you're at half health or below, if it's red you're at 1/3rd. Standing on a health pack makes you refill faster and removes the "delay" for going up past a certain point (without a med pack there is a sizable delay in how fast you regen past each "section" of health.

Spot when you can. As of retail spotting has been toned down significantly, but you should still be doing it when you are able. Try not to miss, but if there's an enemy in a place you can't really see, try to get a triangle on his rear end. Helps you by giving you points; helps your team by killing a dude. Everyone wins.

If you hit back while your reticule is over a point it does different things depending on attack or defense. When attacking, it puts hash marks around it and makes it the squad objective, which yes, gives additional points when it's taken down for the whole squad. If you're defending this technique does seemingly nothing. Your character calls out "We're going over to defense, here" or the Russian equivalent, but the icon doesn't change and you don't get any additional points. I don't know if this is intentional, but it seems odd. The only other time you can do anything like this is spotting the UAV, which gives you a call out, but no HUD indicator or minimap chevron.

RESOURCES

Honestly this thread has more info in it than EA's page for the game, and interviews and previews have been vague up to this point or focus entirely on comparing the game to a SIMILAR GAME IN THIS GENRE WHICH RECENTLY SOLD 9 BILLION COPIES and apparently has a QA team of one guy in a tin shed in the San Fernando Valley (goes by the name "Dr. Cody"). Just play the fuckin' demo.
