OVERVIEW
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is an upcoming first-person shooter video game in development by EA Digital Illusions CE and to be published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The game is a direct sequel to Battlefield: Bad Company and was announced at one of Electronic Arts' earnings conferences and was showcased for the first time at E3 2009. The game is scheduled for release on March 2, 2010 in North America and March 5, 2010 in Europe, as announced at the EA press conference at Gamescom.

GAMEPLAY
Gameplay in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 resembles that of the original and is set in various environments from around the world, including the mountainous regions along the borders of Russia. Like its predecessor, Bad Company 2 features destructible environments. The system is dubbed "Destruction 2.0," and the level of destruction is extended — players can now completely collapse a building as opposed to only blowing out walls. Along with Battlefield Vietnam, Bad Company 2 is one of only two games in the Battlefield series to have blood without third-party modification. There will be new vehicles in Bad Company 2, such as the UH-60, a quad bike, a two-man patrol boat, a personal watercraft, an AA-gun mounted on a light tank, and a UAV helicopter controlled via laptop.

ESRB also published the following summary of the game: "This is a first-person shooter featuring two modes of gameplay: single player, in which players control soldiers on a mission to stop terrorists; and multiplayer, in which players engage in team-based combat ("Conquest," "Rush," "Squad Rush," and "Squad Death Match"). Both modes involve using machine guns, rifles, grenade launchers, and rockets to kill enemy soldiers on the battlefield. In single-player mode, players conduct missions on an unnamed Japanese island during World War II and then move into the modern day through jungles, deserts, and snowy terrain. The firefights contain realistic gunfire, loud explosions, cries of pain; large sprays of blood come out of injured characters during the fast-paced combat. There are also close-up depictions of knife-stabbing (flesh-impact sounds) and melee attacks with a power drill. Multiplayer mode tends to involve more goal-oriented tasks, such as "capturing-the-flag," destroying and defending crates, point-based fighting. Characters use profanity during cutscenes and in the heat of battle."

SINGLE PLAYER
On January 22, 2010, it was revealed by senior producer Patrick Bach during an interview that the single player campaign will be about ten hours in length. Right before the close of the show, executive producer Karl Magnus Troedsson stated that the team wants to "give away a good bit of stuff for free," but they also have plans for paid downloadable content as well. He also went on to say that they would like to do additional weapons, among other things that fans want to see.

In a separate trailer released on January 21, the single player campaign was detailed, featuring the return of Private Preston Marlowe, Private Terrance Sweetwater, Private George Gordon Haggard Jr., and Sergeant Samuel D. Redford as the main characters of the game, hunting a fictional unknown weapon made in South America.

The ESRB summary (see above) also states that the game will first take place during World War II and then move into the Modern World. This explains why the Limited Edition has World War II-era weapons.

MULTIPLAYER
The "Gold Rush" mode in the original Bad Company is referred to simply as "Rush" in Bad Company 2. The format is similar in that an attacking team must detonate explosives on a defending team's crates. The attacking team succeeds by eliminating all the crates on the map, and the defending team succeeds if the attackers are not able to eliminate the crates in the active area before their tickets are depleted. Making use of the Destruction 2.0 system, it is also possible to eliminate some of the crates by collapsing the building they are in on top of them. A smaller scale mode called "Squad Rush" was confirmed that has only two opposing teams of four players battle against each other with one existing crate stash.

Multiplayer will allow players to choose from a set of weapon kits before each spawn, the number of which has been further reduced from Bad Company's five down to four: Assault, Engineer, Recon, and Medic (with the Specialist kit being the one removed). In addition to the hand grenades and sidearms standard for all classes, each class also has an initial primary weapon and a pair of gadgets unique to that class. A customizable weapon selection menu is also new to the Bad Company series (similar to unlocks in Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142). Gaining experience points allows a player to unlock and use different weapons and gadgets, some only usable by a given class and some available to any class that player uses. There are also unlockable items that can modify the game's firearms, such as ACOGs, reflex sights, and short or long barrel grenade launchers.[citation needed] If the game is pre-ordered at GameStop, EB Games in Canada, or Amazon in the United Kingdom, the AKS-74U will be immediately unlocked for use.

The experience points used to unlock the above items will be awarded for performing actions conducive to the goals of the player's team, such as eliminating enemy players, healing teammates, or capturing or defending points of interest. Bonuses to the base number of points can be awarded under certain circumstances (such as achieving a headshot in the process of eliminating an enemy player). A dog tag system as seen in Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield: Bad Company returns, awarding players trophies of sorts in the form of opponents' dog tags when they defeat the opponent with a melee attack.

On October 19, 2009, game developer DICE posted a Twitter announcement stating the game will have dedicated server support. This was in response to Infinity Ward's announcement on October 17 that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would not support dedicated servers. Players will also be able to use party chat for each game mode.

DEVELOPMENT
On November 5, 2009, DICE announced a beta for Bad Company 2. Different game-related sites held contests to obtain beta codes. Retailers also gave beta codes to customers who pre-order the game. The PS3 version of the beta started on November 19, while the PC version was pushed back until early 2010 to increase the beta's capacity.

Each public pre-release build of the game feature a map from the final product; the PlayStation 3 beta features the "Arica Harbor" map, while the PC beta and Xbox 360 demo each feature the "Port Valdez" map. All versions only feature the "Rush" gameplay mode.

The online multiplayer demo for the Xbox 360 and the beta for the PC were released on January 28, 2010, and servers will run until February 25. The demo was released on the PlayStation 3 on February 4, 2010 in Europe and North America and February 11, 2010 in Asia.

LIMITED EDITION
Currently, a limited edition version of the game is being sold online for pre-order at the same price as the non-limited version. With it come multiple in-game bonuses, including a radar on tanks that can see enemies even when they are hidden, extra armor for tanks, and a coaxial gun for the driver of the tank. There will also be four extra infantry weapons that come with it: the M1 Thompson, the Colt M1911, a tracer dart gun, and the AKS-74U. However, each of these bonuses can also be attained through regular rank progression. In additon, all Battlefield Veterans will gain access to the M1 Garand; which is exclusive to veterans only.

FROSTBITE OF THE GENITALS
Frostbite Engine is a game engine created by EA Digital Illusions CE (DICE), developers of the Battlefield series, for Battlefield: Bad Company, Battlefield 1943, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. DICE has confirmed a Frostbite 2 engine is being developed that will support DirectX 11 on PC.

GAME MODES
Bad Company 2 shipped with four multiplayer modes.

quote:

RUSH
The objective of the attacking team is to destroy the defender's crates before losing a set amount of forces.

CONQUEST
This mode is built around control points, as teams can stop their enemies from re-spawning by controlling (capping) flags. The first team to reach zero "tickets" loses.

SQUAD DEATHMATCH
A team deathmatch with four squads on the same map.

SQUAD RUSH
A smaller variant of the regular Rush mode with only 4 players on each side. This mode contains just one crate on each tier, two bases and no vehicles.

RANKING UP AND PERSISTENCE
Bad Company 2 continues the tradition of the Battlefield franchise with persistent progression for your character as you gain experience points through kills, assists or completing objectives. In addition, players also gain points towards the equipped class kit to unlock exclusive items. Overall player ranks are represented with borrowed real military ranks like Lieutenant or 5-Star General.

CLASSES
Like previous Battlefield titles, classes are central to the gameplay and functionality of a soldier on the field. Players can choose between four classes on every respawn, each with their own exclusive weapons and gadgets.

ASSAULT
WEAPON UNLOCKS - AEK971, XM8, F2000, AUG, AN94, M416, M16.
This basic infantry unit carries the exclusive fully-automatic rifles and can throw out ammo pouches for his teammates. Its also the only class with access to grenade launchers.

ENGINEER
WEAPON UNLOCKS - 9A91, SCAR, XM8C, AKS74U, UZI, PP2000, UMP.
A mechanic class with access to sub-machine guns and rocket launchers. They can repair any vehicle using the pneumatic socket wrench.

RECON
WEAPON UNLOCKS - M24, GOL, QBU88, SV98, SVU, M95, VSS Vintores.
It's the only class with access to sniper rifles. They also carry motion sensors and have access to plastic explosives or mortar fire.

MEDIC
WEAPON UNLOCKS - M249, M60, MG3, MG36, PKM, QJU88, XM8 LMG.
This self-explanatory class can throw out health packs for their teammates that fastens their health regeneration. They are the only class with access to light machine guns and the highly useful ability to resurrect their teammates using portable defibrillators.

ALL CLASSES
In addition to these classes, players can also customize their soldiers using weapon and vehicle mods. A large number of weapons and gadgets are non-class specific and can be used by anyone on respawn. These alternate kits allow players to earn experience points towards any class, without having to rely on the sometimes weak weapons at lower ranks. These include all the side arms, shotguns and general gadgets like plastic explosives
SIDE ARMS - M9, M1911, MP-443, MP412 Magnum, TRC4 (shoots tracer darts) , M93R,
SHOTGUNS - SPAS12, SPAS-15, NS2000, 870MCS, USAS12, T194, S20K .
SUB MACHINE GUNS - M1A1

KIT SELECTION AND GADGETS
Players are allowed to carry two weapon mods and two gadgets that can vary drastically from one class to another. These customizations are mostly tied to the class specific kits and players will need to rank up in that particular class to unlock a mod. These unlocks usually compliment the general play style of a class or at the very least provide them with more interesting options for their typical role. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect for each class

In addition to class specific mods, players also unlock general mods that can be used with any class. This includes things like extra armor, ammo or grenades for the soldier.

quote:

ASSAULT - Extra Grenades for launcher, Shotgun rounds for their rifles, Smoke Grenades, Scope with Clear Sight or 4x Zoom,
ENGINEER - Extra Explosives, Extra Rockets, Anti-tank mines, Scope with Clear Sight or 4x Zoom, Increased accuracy for aimed fire
RECON - Motion sensors, Scope with 4x or 12x Zoom, WMTN-33 that automatically "spots" enemies
MEDIC - Health Packs with longer range or faster healing, Scope with Clear Sight or 4x, Increased accuracy for aimed & stationary fire

VETERAN STATUS
As with the last game, Bad Company 2 can be used to claim veteran status. In addition to the modern weapons available, there is also a M1 Garand rifle available exclusively to Battlefield veterans. To gain veteran status one must have played at least one other game in the Battlefield series and register online in order to unlock the weapon.

VEHICLE COMBAT AND CUSTOMISATION
Like the first game, BC2 features a large number of vehicles. The type of available vehicles depends on the map and game mode. Players can now customize vehicles by selecting different kinds of ammunition, armor and speed upgrades. These unlocks can be used with any class but as a measure to balance the use of vehicles, players can only use one vehicle mod at a time. If one player has an increased splash damage Spec while the other player has an increased armor Spec, those are integrated into the vehicle they're using. Two players using two of the same type of vehicle Spec does not add on to each other for extra benefits.

ENEMY SPOTTING
A new feature introduced in Bad Company 2 is enemy spotting, where you can point out the location of an enemy on the mini-map. This can be done by pointing the gun at the target through iron sight and pushing the Social/Issue Orders (Q) button. It marks the enemy location on the mini-map and puts a temporary marker on their head, both of which are visible to your entire team. In addition, if someone else kills a spotted enemy, you get bonus experience points.

DOG TAGS
Players can now collect dog tags by knifing a soldier. In addition to the bragging rights, these dog tags award players with extra experience points at the end of each round.

PINS AND INSIGNIA
Players can also earn combat pins for achievements in a single round or long service insignias for continued excellence. These are usually based on things like kill streaks, squad heals or headshots. They also provide significant bonus experience.
