Dragon Age: Origins PC - I see a cloth map and I want it painted red

First Post:
The sequel has officially been announced! New info directly below, scroll down for the base game and expansions/DLC.

On July 8th, BioWare officially announced Dragon Age 2. With a new main character, a new art style, and reworked combat mechanics, it appears that the sequel won't simply be a new story with a few tacked-on minor updates. Whether that's a good thing or not remains to be seen.

The official announcement:

quote:

Dragon Age 2 thrusts players into the role of Hawke, a penniless refugee who rises to power to become the single most important character in the world of Dragon Age. Known to be a survivor of the Blight and the Champion of Kirkwall, the legend around Hawke's rise to power is shrouded in myth and rumor. Featuring an all-new story spanning 10 years, players will help tell that tale by making tough moral choices, gathering the deadliest of allies, amassing fame and fortune, and sealing their place in history. The way you play will write the story of how the world is changed forever.

Key Features :
- Embark upon an all-new adventure that takes place across an entire decade and shapes itself around every decision you make.
- Determine your rise to power from a destitute refugee to the revered champion of the land.
- Think like a general and fight like a Spartan with dynamic new combat mechanics that put you right in the heart of battle whether you are a mage, rogue, or warrior.
- Go deeper into the world of Dragon Age with an entirely new cinematic experience that grabs hold of you from the beginning and never lets go.
- Discover a whole realm rendered in stunning detail with updated graphics and a new visual style.

I'll keep updating the OP as new info comes out. In the meantime, here's some concept art:

BioWare's spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age: Origins is a single player RPG for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 built upon the Eclipse engine with a proprietary D&D-ish rule system. Unlike BioWare's last few titles, it began as a PC game and that continued to be the lead platform throughout development. A single playthrough including all side missions will take an estimated 80+ hours.

quote:

From the first, the Grey Wardens sacrificed everything to stem the tide of darkness. They drew the most powerful mages and the finest warriors from all races and forged them into a fighting force that time and time again drove back the Blight. They remain legends, watching with vigilance for the return of their ancient foe, and stand ready to do battle once more when that day arrives.

As a new Warden recruit, you must prove that you are worthy to stand against the darkspawn threat. Your personal motives and unique reactions will shape your role in Ferelden, whether as a heroic guardian, a selfish tyrant, or any of myriad other possibilities.
The overall tone is said to be inspired by "dark fantasy" book series like George R. R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire and Steven Erikson's Malazan Book Of The Fallen.

The player will create a character with one of six backgrounds (Daelish Elf, Dwarf Commoner, Mage, Human Noble, City Elf, Dwarf Noble), each of which has a unique starting experience and elicits different reactions from NPCs as the game goes along. Hence one meaning of the "Origins" part of the title.

You control a party consisting of up to four active members - your character and three NPCs. You'll meet more party members, but as in previous BioWare games they'll hang out by a campfire and gossip about you behind your back while you fight skeletons and orcs. The camera can be pulled back to a Baldur's Gate-style isometric view or zoomed in to several behind-the-back views as in Mass Effect. Sorry, no first-person 2.5D view with toilets that can be flushed and kicked.

Talking
Thankfully, there is NO Good/Evil alignment meter. Instead, the way you handle conversations and the choices you make will simply have an impact on the people that hear about those particular choices.

There is a dialogue tree with lots of questions, snarkiness, persuasion, intimidation, and hidden options that will pop up depending on your investment in things like Cunning and Willpower. There is also a TON of incidental dialog between your party members and in the world around you.

Fighting
Combat takes place in real-time, but you can pause at any time to issue specific commands to your party members, and you can establish tactics for the AI to follow while you focus on the character you're controlling.

During combat you can perform combat skills, cast spells, and chug potions. As long as one of your party members survives a fight, the rest will regain consciousness at the exact same moment when the battle is over. Thanks, guys. I totally believe that you weren't just pretending to sleep while I did all the work.

Each class has a set of four specialization subclasses. The player character can choose to focus on up to two of these, getting one specialization point that can be used at any time after they reach level 7 and another at level 14. Specializations are entirely optional, and for the most part are unlocked by talking to certain people. To find out how to get them, see the FAQ below.

Warrior

Starting stats: +4 strength, +3 dexterity, +3 constitution

Subclasses:
Berserker Increased strength and resilience at the cost of finesse. +2 strength, +10 health
Templar Dispel magic and inhibit spellcasting. Has a class-specific armor of plate and robe. +2 magic, +3 mental resistance
Champion Inspire allies and intimidate foes. +2 willpower +1 Cunning
Reaver Eat the souls of fallen enemies, gain power the closer you get to dying. +1 constitution +5 physical stamina

Mage

Starting stats: +5 magic, +4 willpower, +1 cunning

Subclasses:
Shapeshifter Change into spiders, bears, and swarms of insects. +2 constitution, +1 armor
Spirit Healer Advanced healing spells, including revives. +2 magic, minor combat health regeneration
Blood Mage Cut your wrists, make dudes explode. +2 constitution +2 spellpower
Arcane Warrior Go melee, equip any armor/weapons in the game. +1 dexterity +5 attack

Rogue

Starting stats: +4 dexterity, +2 willpower, +4 cunning

Subclasses:
Assassin Apply conditions to foes, get bonuses to backstabs. +2 dexterity, +2.5% critical chance
Bard Sing to inspire your party and annoy your enemy. +2 willpower, +1 cunning
Ranger Summon a wolf, bear, or spider. +1 constitution, +5 natural resistance
Duelist Improved attack + defense for melee. +1 dexterity +1 damage

Note: The player's character can choose up to two sub-classes, but there is no dual-classing. You can be a Berserker/Champion, but not a Ranger/Spirit Healer.
