Is the DLC worth buying?
Overlord: Definitely worth it, it has a really awesome story.
Kasumi: Probably worth it. The Overlord mission is better, but Kasumi is an awesome character.
Cerberus card: Probably worth it, they release free stuff on there including an extra party member.
Various armor packs: Up to you; see the more detailed DLC info in the FAQ section
How do I keep everyone alive during the suicide mission?
A) Here's a spoiler-free walkthrough on how to keep everyone alive. Here's some advice on keeping Mordin alive.
If you're super lazy, here's who to pick:
Vents: Tali, Legion, or Kasumi
Leading the fire teams: Garrus, Miranda, or Jacob
Biotic specialist: Samara or Jack
Taking the crew back: Whoever
Just make sure that everyone you pick for special jobs is loyal to you!

Mass Effect 2
The highly-anticipated sequel to BioWare’s epic space opera Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 was released for the PC and X-Box 360 at the end of January 2010.
Original thread title, "Mass Effect 2: We can rebuild him. Faster. Stronger. Gaye-[right hook]" courtesy of DivisionPost.
In ME2, we find out some very interesting things, like what a creepster Shepard can be...

...exactly how badass Garrus is...

...that Shepard don't take no poo poo...

...and that airquotes (especially condescending airquotes ) are not just a human thing.

Spoilers for Mass Effect 1 follow. Be warned.
Previously on "Mass Effect:"
quote:In the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization. In the decades that followed, these mysterious artifacts revealed startling new technologies, enabling travel to the furthest stars. The basis for this incredible technology was a force that controlled the very fabric of space and time.
They called it the greatest discovery in human history.
The civilizations of the galaxy call it... MASS EFFECT."
Here's Bioware's official Previously on Mass Effect video that tells the events of ME1, narrated by Martin Sheen, but caution, there are little video clips from ME2. Here's an amusing video summary of the game, and here's the most important thing from Mass Effect 1.

quote:
Two years after Commander Shepard repelled invading Reapers bent on the destruction of organic life, a mysterious new enemy has emerged. On the fringes of known space, something is silently abducting entire human colonies. Now Shepard must work with Cerberus, a ruthless organization devoted to human survival at any cost, to stop the most terrifying threat mankind has ever faced.
To even attempt this perilous mission, Shepard must assemble the galaxy's most elite team and command the most powerful ship ever built. Even then, they say it would be suicide. Commander Shepard intends to prove them wrong.

Party Members
- Miranda Lawson - A female human Informant and a main character in the iPhone/iPod Touch game "Mass Effect Galaxy." She's the leader of a Cerberus cell and BFFs with The Illusive Man. Video and Video2.
- Jacob Taylor - A male human and the main character in "Galaxy," Jacob is a former Alliance marine who now works with Cerberus, but he doesn't always agree with their methods and doesn't trust The Illusive Man.
- Mordin Solus - A male salarian scientist, Mordin is a genius who doesn't hesitate to hurt bad guys to protect the good guys. He has a lovely singing voice and has plenty of advice for you if you choose to romance an alien. Video.
- Archangel - A turian who kicks a lot of rear end and pisses off mercenaries on Omega with his gang of vigilantes. He's also your brosef Garrus from Mass Effect 1!
- Grunt - A young krogan who REALLY likes killing stuff, but he's young and kind of an idiot. His race is currently infected by a manufactured genetic disease called the genophage, where only 1 of 1000 babies born actually survive, but he was made in a lab by a krogan warlord named Okeer. Video/bio page and Video2.
- Jack aka Subject Zero - A female human biotic and certified crazyperson. She really likes killing things. Video1 and Video2.
- Thane - A male drell assassin, trained by the hanar in the art of killing stuff since he was six years old. He's pretty religious and feels guilt for all the people he's killed. Video1 and Video2.
- Tali'Zorah nar Rayya - A female quarian Mechanist. Her people live on the Migrant Fleet (think the fleet from Battlestar Galactica) and created the Geth, a race of robots who predictably rebelled and now want to kill us. Video. The spergy weirdos at the Bioware forums have given us this lovely description of her as well:
quote:
I could rattle of a non-comprehensive list of traits that Tali'Zorah vas Normandy possesses (intelligence, sweet, shy, earnest, quirky, passionate, courageous, strong yet gentle, reasonable, a voice that makes grown men weak at the knees, a touch of mystery, etc.) which are immensely appealing to many. Yet perhaps it is more succintly summed up by stating that she represents a figure that many of us yearn so deeply, even desperately, for; like a drowning sailor at sea clings to flotsam to keep his head above the encroaching cold water, so too are people here desperate- yet-hopeful that perhaps maybe, just maybe, someday they may count themselves fortunate enough to encounter a real-live woman who encapsulates if not all of these traits, then at very least one of them. In short: Tali has become a symbol of attainable perfection. It is a powerful thing for it speaks to a yearning inside many of us and we feel its call. The character of Tali'Zorah has reached out and captured our hearts and our imagination and we want more. Much more.
Our thoughts on all this:

- Samara - A female Justicar, an asari who takes a sacred oath to punish the wicked and protect the innocent. She is a powerful biotic who is nearly 600 years old. Video/bio page.
- Zaeed Messani - A human bounty hunter/mercenary hired for the team by Cerberus. He's only available if you install the Cerberus Network card, included in every new copy of the game, and connect to the internet.
- Kasumi Goto - A female human and master thief, Kasumi is a DLC character released on April 6. She's available for purchase for 560 MS/Bioware points.
- Secret party member! Legion (info) is a geth with a personality. A thousand of them, in fact.
Important non-party member NPCs
- The Illusive Man - The leader of Cerberus. Few people meet him in person, and nobody knows who he really is. As far as you know, his goal is to further humanity's interests in space and to prevent their destruction by the Reapers and Collectors.
- Joker - The wisecracking pilot of the Normandy in both ME1 and 2, Joker has brittle bone disease, which makes it difficult for him to walk (and probably makes sexytime with female Shepard impossible, much to my disappointment). He and EDI have a very interesting relationship.
- EDI - The AI of the Normandy. She enjoys pestering Joker, so they're constantly bickering.
- Wrex - Wrex is now the leader of most of the krogan clans on the krogan homeworld of Tuchanka, if he survived Virmire in ME1.
- Liara - One of the possible love interests from Mass Effect 1, Liara is still creepily obsessed with Shepard, but currently working as an information broker on the planet Illium. She wants revenge on the Shadow Broker for killing her friend, detailed in the "Mass Effect: Redemption" comic.
- Kaidan/Ashley - Whichever one of these two survived Virmire is still working for the Alliance, and is pissed that you dropped off the grid for two years.

- Anderson - Either the human member of the Council or the assistant to Udina, Anderson's life continues to suck in this game, but amazingly, he still tries to help you out as much as he can.
- Udina - Yooumanity's ambassador to the Citadel, Udina is now either Councilman Anderson's assistant or the Councilman himself, depending on your choices. He's still a total dick, and deserves everything he gets:

- Admiral Hackett - Only present in emails this time, which is sad for those of us who grew to love him in Mass Effect 1.

FAQs
Importing FAQs
Q) Can I import my Shepard from Mass Effect 1 into Mass Effect 2? What will be imported along with the character? How do I work the save game importer?
A) Yes, any Shepard that has completed the game can be imported. The game creates a special save file for each Shepard that beats the game, and you’ll be able to select which one you want. If you've changed Xboxes, copying over your save game data with a memory card does not work, unfortunately, but it does with a data transfer kit. We're hoping for a fix soon. PC users can download saves from Annakie's save game site.
Your level and abilities won’t transfer over directly, but other things will! If you got level 40/50/60, you'll start at level 2/3/4, respectively, with the extra points to spend on abilities that you'd gain from levleing up normally. If you were fully Paragon/Renegade, it will be "acknowledged" with bonus points in whichever you went with.
You cannot change your name, gender, background, or psychological profile when you import.
Goon Hentai Tentacle Demon has posted an extremely helpful guide on how to work the same game importer here.
Q) Where are the save files located on my computer?
A) They are usually found in "My Documents\Bioware\Mass Effect\Save" but if you can't find them there, search your computer for files ending in ".MassEffectSave" and that should work.
Q) Can I change how my ME1 Shepard looks?
A) Yes. The game will also generate a code so you can easily share your Shepard with others, check the Squad screen. See the next post in this thread for some goon-made Shepards. Goon gibbed has also made a save game editor where you can edit your Shepard.
Q) What if I haven't played ME1 so don't have an original Shepard, or if I accidentally deleted it, or I'm switching systems from where my ME1 files are?
If you haven't played, you goddamn should. It's on Steam for cheap and is a great game, and would definitely help you understand the sequel.
If you don't have a Shepard, the game makes several key Mass Effect 1 decisions for you:
-The Council is dead
-Wrex is dead
-For male Shepards, Kaidan is dead; for female Shepards, Ashley is dead
For those starting ME2 on PC, Goon Annakie has created a Mass Effect saves for PC site where you can download end-game save files and find out exactly what the choices made in the game were. You can download these characters and import them so you can get some different characters to play with.
You can also completely customize any game, even newly-started ME2 games, with Gibbed's save editor.
ME1 saves cannot be transferred to a new Xbox with a memory card, but you can use a save editor for that as well.
Q) Can I change the name of a character I've imported on PC?
A) Yes, there are several ways to do this, check Annakie's site for instructions.
Q) What choices are being brought from ME1 into ME2?
A) Pretty much every quest you completed in ME1 will carry over in some way to ME2, whether it's just a small reference or a huge game-changer. A few major things:
-The decision to save either Kaidan or Ashley.
-Whether or not the player kills Wrex on Virmire.
-Whether or not the player decides to save the Citadel Council.
-The player's choice of love interest.
-Whether the player spares or destroys the Rachni Queen at Peak 15.
Gameplay, Character, and Story FAQs
Q) How do I holster my gun?
Press H on computer or Back on the 360 controller.
Q) It sucks that it takes one medigel per person to revive fallen teammates, any advice?
A) You can use medigel before people die to restore health and shields to everyone for just one gel, so give that a shot.
Q) I heard we're working with Cerberus. Aren't they a bunch of crazies who claim to be pro-human but actually kill a bunch of humans in the first game?
A) Yes, but please refer to this chart to understand why Cerberus is also awesome. (Thanks TenMiddleTeeth!)

Q) Why is there ammo in this game and not in the first one?
A) Goon qbert explains it to us nicely!
qbert posted:
The game would frankly be way too easy with infinite ammo, even with overheating in place. Limited ammo requires you to try and make every shot count, it promotes constant switching between your variety of weapons, it promotes a constant use of biotic and tech powers, and to some extent it promotes movement during battle to try and pick up dropped clips. The clip/load sizes may seem small initially, but I think this is intentionally balanced out by the fact that each thermal clip you pick up adds ammo to every gun, again making the most efficient tactic to keep switching between all your guns.
Q) Where are N7 missions/Element Zero?
A) Goon Funkz shared a list of all the N7 missions. Goon OgNar linked a thread on another forum with a list of Element Zero planets.
Total resources needed to research/buy all useful projects in Mass Effect 2:
195,000 Palladium
225,000 Platinum (+50,000 for Med-bay Upgrade, only used to remove Renegade scars)
220,000 Iridium
31,000 Element Zero (+5,000 for Bonus Power Training and +2,500 to retrain Shepard's powers)
1,250,000 Credits
Q) Who are the romance options in this game?
A) You can still stay with whoever you romanced in Mass Effect 1 - Kaidan, Ashley, or Liara - though there's not much for them in this game, as it's a "suicide mission" and they wanted to guarantee that these three would survive it. These relationships will continue for the entire trilogy. If you cheat on your first love interest, there will be "repercussions" in ME3.
Male Shepard romances: Miranda, Subject Zero, Tali
Female Shepard romances: Jacob, Thane, Garrus
Both male and female Shepards can also romance your secretary, Yeoman Kelly Chambers though she doesn't count for the Paramour achievement and might not count as a "real" love interest in terms of what will import to ME3.
Q) What is the point of no return?
A) The trigger for the endgame is a mission with the word "IFF" in it. Do not do the IFF mission until you are pretty much ready to do the endgame. After completing that mission, a kind of timer will begin. You have two missions before A Thing Happens. When This Thing happens, you will need to go through the Omega 4 quickly, or Bad Stuff will happen.
Q) How the HELL do I keep everyone alive during the suicide mission at the end of the game?
A) Here's a spoiler-free walkthrough on how to keep everyone alive. Here's some advice on keeping Mordin alive.
If you're super lazy, here's who to pick:
Vents: Tali, Legion, or Kasumi
Leading the fire teams: Garrus, Miranda, or Jacob
Biotic specialist: Samara or Jack
Taking the crew back: Whoever
Just make sure that everyone you pick for special jobs is loyal to you!
Q) So if it's a suicide mission, can Shepard die?
A) Yes, if you don't upgrade things and don't have many people loyal. If Shepard dies, you will not have an endgame save to import to Mass Effect 3.
Q) WTF was up with the final boss?
A) The final boss is a tiny little human-looking Reaper. The Collectors, being used by the Reapers, are using the most powerful race at this point in time (humans, apparently), melting them down, and creating a new Reaper, which apparently look similar to whatever race they're based on. This baby-Reaper is not completed. It is tiny because it is fetus-sized and will probably be the core of the ship. Here's some concept art: -> here <- We don't have all the info about the Reapers and how they "reproduce" or whatever yet. Be patient and wait for ME3 and please for god's sake don't come in and scream about how the ending is stupid, because it DOES make sense.
Technical FAQs
Q) Can I mod the 360 version of the game?
Yes, here are some instructions on how to edit the game on Xbox.
Q) Why is this game loading SO SLOW on PC?
A) Goon regulargonzalez has advice:
quote:
The Unreal engine has a bug with C2D CPUs where loads can take 10x longer than normal. If it takes more than a 3-4 seconds to use the elevator in the Normandy and you have a C2D, here's how to fix it:
1. Start ME2
2. Alt tab, bring up Task Manager, find the MassEffect2 process, remove affinity from CPU 0, click OK.
3. Put the tickmark back by CPU 0 (should have them both ticked now), click OK. If they were both already ticked, you need to untick them, save, then retick them.
4. Alt-tab back to the game, and your loads should be fast again!
Q) What's the deal with the DLC?
If you bought the physical copy of the game, the DLC codes are printed on little pieces of paper. If you got the game on Steam, go to the My Games tab, right click the game and click View Game CD Key, and all three keys will pop up (thanks BexGu!).
-Cerberus Network Card: Comes with the game if you buy it new, $15 otherwise. Gives access to extra party member Zaeed Massani, extra weapons/armor, and the Hammerhead (vehicle).
-Kasumi - Stolen Memory: Additional party member. 560 MS points. General consensus: worth buying.
-Overlord: New mission to stop a messed up AI for Cerberus. 560 MS points. General consensus: Definitely worth buying, everyone raved about how awesome it was.
-Equalizer pack: Helmet, visor, and armor for Shepard. 160 MS points.
-Alternate Appearance Pack: New costumes for Thane, Garrus, and Subject Zero. 160 MS points.
-Dr Pepper Promo codes: Gives a bunch of helmets. The free codes no longer work, sadly.
-Inferno Armor: Preorder only.
-Terminus Armor: Preorder only.
-Collectors Armor and Assault Rifle: Comes with the Collector's Edition of the game.
-Blackstorm Singularity Gun: Heavy weapon that creates a black hole and does a ton of damage; preorder bonus from Gamestop in the US and Europe, and also from bol.com in Europe.
-Blood Dragon Armor: Code given when you buy a new copy of Dragon Age.
-Incisor Rifle: Bonus from buying the Digital Deluxe edition of the game.
-Mass Effect: Galaxy: Small quest given when you link your EA/Bioware accounts and have both Jacob and Miranda in your party.
Q) What emotes have been purchased for this thread?
A) So far we have (mordin), (turianass), (shepface), and (sicknasty).
Q) Give me just one reason why I should buy this game.
A) You get a fish tank.
Spoiler policy
Please be kind to those who haven't beaten the game yet and remember your spoiler tags. Any quest endings, plot twists, character reveals, really anything that would ruin any part of the surprise of the game, please put in spoiler tags. Thanks!
